Which Laws to Follow

I've Always Wondered

By Rev. David Bonnema, July 10, 2022

9:30am

Welcome - Rev. David Bonnema

Opening Songs - “Great Things”/“Build My Life” - Clint Lanford

Children’s Message - Bailey Beam

Sermon - "Which Laws to Follow”

Today’s Question: How do we pick and choose which of God to follow (i.e. we shouldn’t eat non-kosher food, we shouldn’t get a tattoo, etc)?

The Old Testament laws were given to the Israelite people, not to .

A good interpretive tool when addressing the Old Testament laws is to ask two questions: “Does this law help me love more fully? Does this law help me to love more fully?”

“Don’t misunderstand why I have come. I did not come to abolish the law of Moses or the writings of the prophets. No, I came to them.” —Matthew 5:17

Six times Jesus says, “You have heard it said… but I say to you.” Meaning— this was the Old Testament law, but here is the universal law of Christ.

What was the dividing law of hostility? (See Ephesians 2)

Jesus did this by ending the system of law with its commandments and regulations. He made between Jews and Gentiles by creating in himself one new people from the two groups. —Ephesians 2:15

Song - “Reckless Love”

Offering and Prayer of Thanksgiving

Closing Song - “Holy Spirit”

Benediction

Prelude

Welcome - Rev. David Bonnema

Call to Worship - Rev. Dana Seiler

Leader: Welcome to this place of love and grace.

People: God invites us to be part of this community of hope.

Leader: God invites us all to share in the love of Jesus.

People: We are invited to come just as we are.

Leader: Children of God, welcome to worship.

People: Let us raise a joyful hymn of praise to the Lord.

Hymn - “For the Beauty of the Earth” - #473 v 1,2,4,5

Prayer of Confession: Gracious God, we come today to confess that we want everything to be entertaining and easy. We want a party where we can play fun games and eat good food. When you call us to do hard things, our first reaction is to say “No thanks, I’m good right here.” We don’t understand that good things often come from new and uncomfortable experiences. Help us be people who respond to Your call, who are ready to experience all of life, knowing that You are blessing us always in the name of Jesus, Amen.

Doxology

Affirmation of Faith - The Apostles’ Creed: I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Closing Hymn - “What a Friend We Have in Jesus” - #403
