Sermon - “The Prison of Fear”

Today’s Question: I feel anxious and sad about what’s happening in the world. How can help me feel less worried?

What is one of the biggest worries in your life?

I prayed to the Lord, and he answered me. He me from all my fears. - Psalm 34:4

When worries strike, put things in perspective and ask “what side of the river am I standing on?”

The universe is not a tragic expression of meaningless , but a marvelous display of an orderly cosmos. - Martin Luther King Jr.

Those who trust in the Lord will find new strength. They will high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint. —Isaiah 40:31

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, through and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. —Philippians 4:6-7

Prayer of Confession

Gentle God, we come to You this morning aware of the many worries in our lives. We worry about ourselves. We worry about our family and friends. We lie awake at night because we can’t shut off our minds to the many frightful possibilities that could mar our lives. Yet we know that You call us to trust in You, to cast all our cares on to You, and to not be afraid. Help us to be courageous Christians, confident in the knowledge that You are good, and Your mercies are new each and every day, through Jesus Christ, Amen.

Doxology

Affirmation of Faith - The Apostles’ Creed I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
