Sermon - “The Wisdom of Job”

Today’s Question: Why did take away my sister at such a young age?

In Hebrew the name “Job” means “the persecuted one.”

Then they sat on the ground with him for and nights. No one said a word to him, because they saw how great his suffering was. -Job 2:13

His wife said to him, “Are you still maintaining your integrity? Curse God and die!” He replied, “You are talking like a foolish woman. Shall we accept good from God, and not ?” -Job 2:9-10

Job became angry with God over his loss, but he did not blame God. He recognized both goodness and tragedy are a part of this life. Even so, he hoped for the resurrection.

Can the dead live again? If so, this would give me through all my years of struggle… -Job 14:14

Job affirms that the love of God can encompass even death.

I know that my lives, and that in the end he will stand on the earth. -Job 19:25

Prayer of Confession: Lord God, we come today to admit that we don’t get why life has to be so hard. Why do bad things happen to good people? Why do the innocent suffer? Why does life seem so unfair? We turn to You for understanding, but often we don’t get the answers we seek. Help us to believe in Your good grace and mercy, even when we can’t see it happening in our lives. Guide us to a deeper understanding of what is means to be a child of God, in the holy name of Jesus, Amen.

Doxology

Affirmation of Faith - The Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
