Sermon - “Beyond” - Rev. David Bonnema

Incorrect Statement: God won’t give you more than you can .

God is faithful. He will not allow you to be beyond what you can handle. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure. —1 Corinthians 10:13

Life will often give you more than you can handle on your own. But with God, we can handle all of life.

Paul shares a spiritual experience as an example of weakness. That experience is worth boasting about, but I’m not going to do it. I will boast only about my .  —2 Corinthians 12:5

Oftentimes we try to do two things with our weaknesses:

  1. them
  2. Overcompensate for them

Three different times I begged the Lord to take it away. But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my is made perfect in weakness.” —2 Corinthians 12:8-9

What does it mean that God’s grace is sufficient for you?

When a person acknowledges their weakness, then the power of God can more freely flow through them.

Hymn - “My Hope is Built - #379

Prayer of Confession: Merciful God, we are a prideful people. We think that we have to do everything with our own abilities and on our own merits. We believe that we can handle whatever comes our way, but we forget that the reason we can handle so much is because You are with us. Help us to remember where our strength comes from, as we seek to live our lives of faith and trust in You, O God, through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

Offering

Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper

Affirmation of Faith - The Apostles’ Creed: I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
