Sermon - “The Eighth Son”

God sends Samuel to anoint a new king. This is secret and dangerous because there is already a king.

Samuel said, “How can I go? If Saul hears of it, he will me.” —1 Samuel 16:2a

Samuel is presented with the eldest son, Eliab. What makes him believe Eliab will be God’s next chosen king?

What would be your criteria for choosing a king? 1. 2. 3.

God’s Criteria But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his or his height, for I have rejected him. God does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but God looks at the .” —1 Samuel 16:7

Why was David the least likely to be chosen as king?

God cares about the content of your heart, not how you look on the outside.

Hymn - “Called as Partners in Christ’s Service” - #343

Prayer of Confession
Merciful God, we hear Your call, and we want to be ready to do Your will. We just aren’t sure that we are up to the tasks You set before us. We are comfortable, and are reluctant to leave the warmth and safety of our homes to venture into unknown circumstances. Forgive us when we so easily doubt Your call, Your presence, and Your abiding love. Release us from our lives of self-centeredness and bring us to a fulfilling life of service to Your people, as we seek to serve You in all that we do and say, through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

Affirmation of Faith - The Apostles’ Creed: I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
