Sermon “Slaying Giants”
A giant is an obstacle to you growing in your faith.

DNA of a Giant-

  1. Appears too big to overcome.
  2. Actively stunts growth in your faith.
  3. Shrinks your view of God.

My giant is…

When Saul and all Israel heard these words of the Philistine, they were and greatly afraid. —1 Samuel 17:11

Fear is the natural reaction to giants. While Saul and his army are afraid, David finds confidence in God.

“Your servant has killed both lions and bears; and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be like one of them, since he has defied the armies of the God.” David said, “The Lord, who saved me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear, will save me from the hand of this Philistine.” —1 Samuel 17:36-37a

What is the significance of worshipping a living God?

2 Concluding Points About Faith

First, the Lord does not save by sword or spear.

Second, David runs the battle.

Hymn - “Our God, Our Help in Ages Past”

Prayer of Confession:
Holy Lord, we are people full of fears and worries. We worry about our health and our finances. We fear for our safety and for those that we love. We put belief in our own abilities and don’t truly believe that You will come through for us in the hard times. We do not always trust in Your Word when you say “do not be afraid” over and over. We ask Your forgiveness and Your strength as we face the giants in our lives together, in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

Doxology

Affirmation of Faith - The Apostles’ Creed: I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
