Sermon - “Audience of One” - Rev. David Bonnema

“A life lived listening to the decisive call of is a life lived before one audience that exceeds all others- the Audience of One.” —Oz Guiness

David wrote Psalm 57 about his experience of hiding in a cave while King Saul pursued him. Have mercy on me, O God, have mercy! I look to you for . I will hide beneath the shadow of your wings until the danger passes by. I cry out to God Most High, to God who will fulfill his purpose for me. —Psalm 57:1-2

Saul enters the cave where David is hiding. His men tell him that this is the moment to kill Saul: So David crept forward and cut off a piece of the hem of Saul’s robe. But then David’s began bothering him because he had cut Saul’s robe. —1 Samuel 24:5

David chooses to listen to God rather than the voices of his men. David follows an Audience of One.

David teaches us two lessons:

1. We must do what is , not what is convenient.

2. We must listen to .

Prayer of Confession
God of Truth, it is difficult to let go of our anger toward those who have wronged us. We want justice and vindication for ourselves and for those we love. We want to get back an eye for an eye, often treating others in the exact opposite way we would like to be treated, because “they deserve it.” Help us to remember Your words of hope and forgiveness when You tell us to love our enemies and pray for those who persecute us. Holy Lord, we need Your help to let go of our anger toward others, so that Your love might shine through our relationships and in our lives, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Doxology

Affirmation of Faith - The Apostles’ Creed:
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
