Sermon - “Perseverance - Keep Going!”

Perseverance: steadfastness in doing something despite or delay in achieving success.

When have you had to have perseverance lately?

David was years old when he became king, and he reigned forty years. —2 Samuel 5:4

David persevered and is finally made king. But even in this position of power, he acknowledges that his success is totally dependent on God.

“Who am I, Sovereign Lord, and what is my family, that you have me this far?”  —2 Samuel 7:18

A life lived with God doesn’t always feel like a straight line from promise to . Life can feel more like a zig zag than a straight line.

David has a choice of what kind of king he will be. This choice is shown in the way he treats Jonathan’s son.

“Don’t be afraid,” David said to him, “for I will surely show you for the sake of your father Jonathan. I will restore to you all the land that belonged to your grandfather Saul, and you will always eat at my table.” —2 Samuel 9:7

God has brought you this far, and won't abandon you now.

Prayer of Confession
Almighty God, we bow down before many things in our lives, like money and power, prestige and pride, gossip and slander, self-righteousness and privilege. We forget that You alone are King, and worthy of all our praise and adoration. Help us to keep You as King of our hearts and help us to allow You to rule in our daily lives. Guide us to be your servants, trusting in You as our only King, as we strive to follow Jesus Christ, Your Son, in whose name we pray, Amen.

Affirmation of Faith - The Apostles’ Creed: I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
