Sermon - “A Fall From Grace” - Rev. David Bonnema

David’s story offers us warning signs for when something is not right in our hearts.

  1. Warning Sign #1: David is - he has removed himself from his community.
  2. Warning Sign #2: David his actions- he convinces himself he is right (even when he is not).
  3. Warning Sign #3: David keeps - he does not take the opportunity to repent or turn back.
  4. Warning Sign #4: David God- he closes his mind to God.

God confronts David through the prophet Nathan. Finally, David goes to God in repentance. His prayer is recorded in Psalm 51.

For the director of music. A psalm of David. When the prophet Nathan came to him after David had committed adultery with Bathsheba. in me a pure heart, O God,and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me. to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me. Then I will teach transgressors your ways, so that sinners will turn back to you. —Psalm 51:10-12

All of us make mistakes. When we do, we must bring our faults and failures to God, who wants to restore the relationship with us.

Prayer of Confession
O God, sometimes we do the very things that we know are wrong. We can’t seem to help ourselves, for our desires overwhelm our thoughts and actions. We disappoint others, ourselves, and You, Lord, and need Your strength to return to the right path. Help us to be Your people, restoring to us the joy of Your salvation. Give us a willing spirit to live as children of God, through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

Doxology

Affirmation of Faith - The Apostles’ Creed: I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
