Sermon - “Flawed and Faithful”

Today we will study King David’s last words before he died.

As the time of King David’s death approached, he gave this charge to his son Solomon: “I am going where everyone on earth must someday go. Take and be strong.” —1 Kings 2:1-2

David wants his son to be brave as he gets ready for the responsibility of becoming the next king.

“Observe the requirements of the Lord your God, and follow all his ways. Keep the decrees, commands, regulations, and laws written in the Law of Moses so that you will be in all you do and wherever you go.”  —1 Kings 2:3

David wants his son to follow God closely. He believes his success will be dependent upon it. Unfortunately, David still holds on to old scores to settle. King David is a mixture of flawed and faithful.

What would you want your last words to be?

We can approach the world with clenched fists or open hands. What is the difference?

Clenched fists:

Open hands:

Let us pursue God faithfully as our greatest desire.

Call to Worship from Joshua 1 - Rev. Dana Seiler

  • Leader: God commands us to be strong and courageous;
  • People: The Lord is with us wherever we go.
  • Leader: We should not be terrified or discouraged;
  • People: The Lord is with us wherever we go.
  • Leader: We will walk in the ways of the Lord;
  • People: The Lord is with us wherever we go.

Hymn - “A Mighty Fortress is Our God” - #260

Prayer of Confession
Merciful God, we love to be in control of things. We are taught to plan and organize so that we can get the outcomes we desire. Often things are out of our control, yet we try to control them anyway. We have made ourselves the center of our lives, forgetting that we can do so much more with Your help and strength. Help us to give control of our lives over to You so that we may become the people You would have us to be, living in unity with one other in the way that was taught to us by Your Son, Jesus Christ, in whose name we pray, Amen.

Doxology

Affirmation of Faith - The Apostles’ Creed: I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Closing Hymn - “Grace Greater Than Our Sin”
