Sermon - “Abundant and Eternal” - Rev. David Bonnema

Today we will explore a profound statement of Jesus: “Whoever keeps my word will see death.” - John 8:51

What Jesus is describing is the eternal life.

Eternal: without or end.

Those who follow God “will never be condemned for their sins, but they have passed from death into life.” —John 5:24b

Jesus claims that those who follow God are already living the eternal life. For them, death is not the end but a transition.

Your life began with God, it will end with God, and that means our present years on earth should be all about .

Jesus said to them, “Very truly, I tell you, before Abraham was, .” —John 8:58

In this statement, Jesus reveals himself to be God on earth.

Those who place their faith in God are already living eternal life.

Call to Worship - Rick Ayers

  • Leader: Have you ever felt washed up, brittle, worn to the bone?
  • People: We have felt grief lay heavy on our backs.
  • Leader: Have you ever felt like hope was out of reach?
  • People: We have wondered, “Can these bones live?”
  • Leader: If you have, then you are in the right place, for this is God’s house. Hope lives here.
  • People: We come to rest our weary bones and worship our Holy God.

Hymn - “Arise, Your Light Is Come!” - 4 Verses #411

Prayer of Confession
O God, how we love to be right! We believe everything that we think is the truth, and shut our ears to the experts who tell us we are wrong. We read Your Word and doubt. We travel the hard pathways and question whether You are there. Set us aright, O God, and open our eyes to the things that we have blinded ourselves to. Transform us into humble people who seek to know You on a deeper level through your Son, Jesus Christ, Amen.

Doxology

Affirmation of Faith
We believe in a God who meets us in the shadows, who welcomes our questions, who invites us to begin again. We believe that Jesus showed us a new way, a deeper faith, a more compassionate existence. We believe that all of our beginnings should return us to this foundation, and that no matter how many times we lose our way, God always welcomes us home. Amen.
