Sermon - “Spirit or Flesh”

I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the that will be revealed in us.  —Romans 8:18

What are some of your present sufferings?

We and all of creation eagerly anticipate God’s future glory. How do we know it will one day come? Paul says this: We believers also groan, even though we have the Holy Spirit within us as a of future glory, for we long for our bodies to be released from sin and suffering.  —Romans 8:23

The Holy Spirit provides a glimpse, a preview, of God's future glory. Even now, the Spirit is helping us in our struggles.

We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself for us with groaning too deep for words. —Romans 8:26

The love of God is the driving force of the universe.

Call to Worship - Rick Ayers

  • Leader: Holy Spirit, breathe on us;
  • People: Pour Your Spirit out, Lord.
  • Leader: Our hearts burn with holy desire;
  • People: Pour Your Spirit out, Lord.
  • Leader: For we, the church, bear Your light;
  • People: Pour Your Spirit out, Lord.
  • Leader: We need fresh wind in our lives;
  • People: Pour Your Spirit out, Lord.

Hymn - “You Poured Out Your Spirit”

Prayer of Confession: God Almighty, we come today to confess that we believe, but we also doubt. We know that You created everything for good, but see so much that is wrong in the world around us that we cannot understand where hope can possibly come from. Forgive us for forgetting You and Your goodness. Help us to allow Your Spirit into our lives so that our hearts may be filled with the promises of grace and mercy, of hope and strength, in the precious name of Jesus, Amen.

Doxology

Affirmation of Faith
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Closing Hymn - “Breathe on Me, Breath of God”
