Sermon - “Judas the Betrayer” - Rev David Bonnema

At one point Judas believed in Jesus and wanted to be a disciple. What changed?

Judas did not say this because he cared about the poor but because he was a ; as keeper of the money bag, he used to help himself to what was put into it. —John 12:6

Judas secretly cut himself off from the community of the disciples. Eventually, this led to him betraying Jesus.

While Jesus was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, arrived. With him was a large crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests and the elders of the people. Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: “The one I kiss is the man; arrest him.” Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, “Greetings, !” and kissed him. —Matthew 26:47-49

What is the significance of Judas calling Jesus “Rabbi”?

Jesus replied, “Do what you came for, .” —Matthew 26:50

In times of struggle, Jesus will always seek to steer us back on the path of life.

Prayer of Confession
Generous God, it is so easy to think about ourselves before we think of other people. We enjoy our cars, homes, boats, and all of our nice things. Our natural inclination is to store our possessions, sometimes forgetting that You tell us to be generous with others. Help us to remember to also share a portion of what we have been given, so that while we are saving for the future, and enjoying the present, we may also see that others have what they need and we may do Your will, through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

Doxology

Affirmation of Faith - The Apostles’ Creed: I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
