Sermon - “Thomas the Brave”

Jesus wants to go back to a very dangerous region. The other disciples refuse.
Then Thomas (also known as Didymus) said to the rest of the disciples, “Let us also go, that we may with him.” —John 11:16

What sort of faith does Thomas demonstrate?

Thomas was never shy to ask a question: Thomas said to him, “Lord, we know where you are going, so how can we know the way?” —John 14:5

Thomas’ friends told him that Jesus had risen from the dead. But he did not believe based on their testimony alone. But he said to them, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not .” —John 20:25b

Jesus lovingly met Thomas at the exact point of his need and then guided him back to faith.

Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have yet have believed.” —John 20:29

Prayer of Confession
Almighty God, the many ways we find to doubt You are astounding. At times we doubt Your power and Your ability to do actual miracles in our lives. At other times, we doubt Your timing or Your methods. We fool ourselves into believing that our ways are better. And, most importantly, we doubt that all You are doing for us is because You love us and want us to prosper. Help us with our unbelief. Forgive us for looking through worldly eyes instead of seeing with heavenly vision. Thank You for Your endless grace and patience, in the precious Name of Jesus. Amen.

Doxology

Affirmation of Faith - The Apostles’ Creed: I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
