Sermon - “The Reluctant Prophet”

Describe a time you've taken a wrong turn.

But Jonah set out to to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord. He went down to Joppa and found a ship going to Tarshish; so he paid his fare and went on board, to go with them to Tarshish, away from the presence of the Lord. —Jonah 1:3

What are the reasons people may flee from God today?

Jonah offers to sacrifice himself so others may live. He said to them, “Pick me up and me into the sea; then the sea will quiet down for you; for I know it is because of me that this great storm has come upon you.” —Jonah 1:12

God does not seek to punish Jonah. God wants to get his attention: But the Lord a large fish to swallow up Jonah; and Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights. —Jonah 1:17

When we flee from God’s presence, God has creative ways of getting us back on track.

Hymn - “Called as Partners in Christ’s Service”

Prayer of Confession
Lord of all Good, we hear You calling. We want to be obedient people, and yet we really wish that You would call someone else. We don’t believe that we are equipped. We have other things on our calendar. And, sometimes, we just don’t want to. Help us to be ready and willing. Help us to be excited about the things You call us to do. Forgive us when we are reluctant or disinterested, for we want to be Your disciples who walk in the path of Jesus, in whose name we pray today, Amen.

Doxology

Affirmation of Faith - The Apostles’ Creed: I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
