Then the word of the Lord came to Jonah a time: “Go to the great city of Nineveh and proclaim to it the message I give you.” —Jonah 3:1-2

Describe a time you’ve needed a second chance.

Jonah uses his second chance to obey God and the results are miraculous. The Ninevites God. A fast was proclaimed, and all of them, from the greatest to the least, put on sackcloth. —Jonah 3:5

Dagon, the god of Nineveh, was half-human and half- .

The king is unsure if God will forgive them due to their wicked past. He did not yet understand that God will always forgive authentic repentance.

When God saw what they did and how they turned from their evil ways, he and did not bring on them the destruction he had threatened. —Jonah 3:10

A new day, a changed life, begins the moment God’s grace captures one’s heart.

Call to Worship - Rev. Dana Seiler

  • Leader: As we gather today, we each bring something to worship:
  • People: We bring the burdens of the week.
  • Leader: We bring prayers of hope, and prayers of anguish.
  • People: We bring our voices, our offerings, and our questions.
  • Leader: We bring our faith, tattered or whole as it may be.
  • People: We bring these to God as we worship today.

Hymn - “God of Grace and God of Glory” - #420 Verses 1, 3, 4

Prayer of Confession
God of Grace, we come to You today as people who are thankful for second chances. We know that we get things wrong time and time again, and are grateful that we are allowed to get back up, try again, and still be Your beloved children. Forgive us when we take that for granted. Forgive us for assuming there will always be another chance, and help us to make the most of what you are asking us to do right here and right now, in the name of Jesus, Amen.

Doxology

Affirmation of Faith - The Apostles’ Creed: I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
