Nicodemus— skit by Chris Easterling

Sermon - “Pharisee to Disciple”

Based on the skit, what have you learned about Nicodemus?

To see God’s work in the world requires a spiritual transformation. Jesus said, “I tell you the truth, no one can the kingdom of God unless they are born again.” —John 3:3

Love, not condemnation, is God’s message to us. For God so the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.  —John 3:16

Why did the temple guards refuse to arrest Jesus?

Nicodemus, who had gone to Jesus earlier and who was one of their own number, asked, “Does our law a man without first hearing him to find out what he has been doing?” —Luke 7:50-51

What fear is getting in your way of fully embracing Jesus?

Transformation occurs when we approach Jesus up close.

Hymn - “I Am Thine, O Lord”

Prayer of Confession
Loving God, You tell us time and time again through the scriptures that we are Your children, that You love us and You are with us, and yet, we run away at the first sign that we may have done something to disappoint You. We forget just how much You are on our side, pulling for us to be the best possible versions of ourselves, waiting for us to ask for Your help, and standing beside us in love and support. Forgive us for assuming that You would be anything other than the loving, forgiving, Almighty God that You are. Help us to continue to be more like Jesus, in whose name we pray today, Amen.

Doxology

Affirmation of Faith - The Apostles’ Creed: I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Closing Hymn - “Nearer My God to Thee”
