Sermon - “Drop Your Stone”

What did you learn from the skit about the biblical story we are about to study?

We do not know the name of the woman who committed adultery. She is referred to only by one of her worst moments. What must this have felt like?

They were using this question as a , in order to have a basis for accusing him. —John 8:6a

What do you think Jesus wrote on the ground?

When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, “Let any one of you who is without

be the first to throw a stone at her.” Again he stooped down and wrote on the ground. —John 8:7-8

Jesus straightened up and asked her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” “No one, sir,” she said. “Then neither do I you,” Jesus declared. “Go now and your life of sin.” —John 8:10-11

Drop your stones and turn to Jesus for both mercy and justice.

Hymn - “When I Survey the Wondrous Cross” - #101 v 1, 2, 4

Prayer of Confession
Loving God, sometimes we delight in the misfortunes of others because it makes us feel better about our own failures. We see the plight of our neighbors and are secretly glad that our faults don’t seem as bad. Forgive our unkind thoughts. Help us to be better people. Allow our first reaction to be kindness and mercy instead of judgment and comparison. Give us a heart that is able to see the good in others, and turn us into better disciples of Jesus, in whose name we pray, Amen.

Affirmation of Faith - The Apostles’ Creed: I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
