Sermon - “Stretch Out Your Hand”

The fourth commandment is “Remember the and keep it holy.”

Then he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for , not man for the Sabbath. So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.” Mark 2:27-28

Another time Jesus went into the synagogue, and a man with a hand was there.  —Mark 3:1

What would it feel like to be the man with the withered hand, standing in front of the whole congregation, hoping to be healed?

Then Jesus asked them, “Which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do or to do evil, to save life or to kill?” —Mark 3:4a

The religious teachers do not answer Jesus’ question. They remain silent. When have you remained silent during a time when you needed to speak up?

He looked around at them in anger and, deeply distressed at their hearts, said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He stretched it out, and his hand was completely restored. —Mark 3:5

Open your heart to God.

Prayer of Confession
Holy Lord, today we confess our tendency to yield to the pressures of the world. We often remain silent when we should speak, and we hesitate to act when action is needed. Instead of standing up for what is right, we all too often go along with the crowd. Forgive us for our moments of weakness. Grant us the courage to stand up and speak out, all in the name of Jesus Christ, in whose name we pray, Amen.

Doxology

Affirmation of Faith - The Apostles’ Creed: I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
