Sermon - “Freed, Forgiven, Returned”

The land must not be sold permanently, because the land is and you reside in my land as foreigners and strangers. —Leviticus 25:23

What is the difference between an Ownership Mindset and a Stewardship Mindset?

If any of your fellow Israelites become poor and sell to you, do not make them work as slaves. They are to be treated as hired workers or temporary residents among you; they are to work for you until the Year of Jubilee.  —Leviticus 25:39-40

How does Jubilee break the cycle of generational poverty?

If anyone is poor among your fellow Israelites in any of the towns of the land the Lord your God is giving you, do not be or tightfisted toward them. Rather, be openhanded and freely lend them whatever they need. —Deuteronomy 15:7-8

God is creating a community of generosity and open hearts right here at Unity.

Offering and Prayer - Rev. Dana Seiler

  • Leader: We are children of God:

  • Leader: We are members of a community;
  • People: Called to care, to respond, and to share our freedom.
  • Leader: We are one in Christ Jesus;
  • People: Called to know God, love each other, and serve the world.
  • Leader: We are people of the resurrection;
  • People: So may our hearts be open as we worship God today.

Hymn - “Seek Ye First” - #333 - 2 Verses

Prayer of Confession
God of Grace, we come to You today asking for yet another do-over. We are so sure of ourselves and our own abilities that we sometimes end up in places we don’t intend, and don’t know how to return. Help us, O Lord. Wipe our slate clean. Restore us to a place where we are in right relationship with You and with others so we can live as Your blessed children. We ask all of this in the precious name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

Doxology

Affirmation of Faith - The Apostles’ Creed; I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
