Sermon - “New Responsibilities”

When have you been asked to take on a new area of leadership or responsibility?

Since then, no  has risen in Israel like Moses, whom the Lord knew face to face, who did all those signs and wonders the Lord sent him to do in Egypt—to Pharaoh and to all his officials and to his whole land.  –Deuteronomy 34:10-11

Joshua is asked to take Moses’ place as leader of God’s people. Talk about big shoes to fill! God promises to be with him in this new responsibility.

As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never you nor forsake you. —Joshua 1:5b

Be strong and , because you will lead these people to inherit the land I swore to their ancestors to give them. —Joshua 1:6

Where do you need inner strength?

Where do you need courage?

Full of strength and courage, Joshua accepted the new responsibility God had given him. And we can too.

  • Leader: For the beauty of a summer day,

  • Leader: For the chance to come before our creator God,
  • People: We give thanks for all this and more as we worship God today.

Prayer of Confession
Almighty God, it is hard to see You working behind the scenes of our lives. We don’t trust that the plans that You have for us will work out for good. We don’t have the courage to step out in faith and be bold in our declarations of Your will for our lives. Forgive us for the times when we are timid and weak, when we believe that we are not equipped, and when we don’t try for fear of failure. Turn us into courageous disciples who bravely follow You, in Jesus’ name, Amen.

Doxology

Affirmation of Faith - The Apostles’ Creed: I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
