Sermon - “Symbols of Our Faith”

What do the following symbols represent? Rose: Dove: Cross:

Today’s symbols: Bread and Chalice The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my , which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me.” —1 Corinthians 11:23b-24

By following Jesus, we embrace the same self-sacrificial love Jesus displayed on the cross.

“An eye for an eye makes the whole world .” —Gandhi

In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.” —1 Corinthians 11:25

The New Covenant introduces a whole new way of life.

For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you the Lord’s death until he comes. -1 Corinthians 11:26

Opening Hymn - “Open My Eyes” - #324 3 Verses

Prayer of Confession:

Sovereign Lord, we are guilty of going through the motions. We say prayers by rote, not paying attention to the words. We take the bread and the wine without realizing the deeper meaning of this special sacrament. Open our eyes and our hearts so that we may understand the great love and sacrifice that has been given to us; that we might receive the love and joy that is ours through Jesus Christ, in whose name we pray today, Amen.

Affirmation of Faith - The Apostles’ Creed: I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
