What is your definition of “sacrifice”?

Three things to know about sacrifices in the Old Testament:

  1. A sacrifice was a gift of your to God.

If the animal you present as a burnt offering is from the herd, it must be a male with no defects. — Leviticus 1:3

  1. A sacrifice became food for the .

The meat of the peace offering of thanksgiving must be eaten on the same day it is offered.  — Leviticus 7:15

  1. A sacrifice symbolized between you and God.

That is why, when came into the world, he said to God, “You did not want animal sacrifices or sin offerings.     But you have given me a body to offer. You were not pleased with burnt offerings     or other offerings for sin. Then I said, ‘Look, I have come to do your will, O God—     as is written about me in the Scriptures.’” —Hebrews 10:5-7

The sacrifice that God desires is your life.

Call to Worship - Rev. Dana Seiler *

  • Leader: Come, children of God: God has blessed you today.
  • People: We are blessed by work and rest, by word and silence.
  • Leader: Come, you who follow Christ, who will not lead you astray.
  • People: We will follow His path, and know glory and sacrifice.
  • Leader: Come, all who are both saints and sinners, receive God’s love.
  • People: We offer ourselves as we worship God.

Hymn - “How Great Thou Art” - #467 Verses 1-3

Prayer of Confession:
Glorious God, we fear the word sacrifice. We are afraid that we might be asked to give up something we love or do something that would be painful. Help us to see that choosing You is joyful; that offering praise to You is filled with abundance and not scarcity, and forgive us for fearing that You would ever ask us for anything that would cause us harm. Help us to remember our blessings that come through our sacrifices, through the example of Jesus Christ, in whose name we pray, Amen.

Doxology

Affirmation of Faith - The Apostles’ Creed:
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
