Sermon - “The Good News”

Jesus began his ministry with a central preaching theme: After John was put in prison, Jesus went into Galilee, proclaiming the of God. —Mark 1:14

What is the good news? Jesus defines it for us. “The time has come,” he said. “The of God has come near.” —Mark 1:15a

The kingdom of God is a new reality where the world is according to God’s values.

How do we live in God’s kingdom? Two things are required: “ and believe the good news!” —Mark 1:15b

To repent is to change one’s way of and align it with Gods’.

Believe: to put your and confidence in.

Where does your heart and mind need to be realigned to the ways of God?

Welcome - Rev. David Bonnema

Call to Worship - Rev. Dana Seiler

  • Leader: Gather in the presence of God, the Giver of life and truth.
  • People: We come to listen, to learn, and to follow.
  • Leader: The Holy Spirit is among us, speaking still.
  • People: Open our hearts to the living Word.
  • Leader: Form us in study and strengthen us in obedience.
  • People: Let us worship God, our guide and our strength.

Hymn - “How Firm a Foundation” - #361 Verses 1, 2, 5

Prayer of Confession:
Holy Lord, Your Word is amazingly accessible to us, yet we confess how often we ignore it. We choose what is easy instead of what is faithful. We listen to voices that flatter rather than truths that transform. We shrink back from obedience when it feels costly, and we trust our own strength instead of Your Spirit. Forgive us. Renew in us a love for Your Word and a courage to follow where You lead. Form us into people who study deeply, listen carefully, and live confidently in Your grace, through Your Son, Jesus Christ, Amen.

Affirmation of Faith - The Apostles’ Creed:
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
