Sermon - “Teacher, Prophet … or More?”

Who do the crowds believe Jesus to be?

“But what about ?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?” —Luke 9:20a

Some say Jesus is a great moral teacher or a symbol of justice. Peter answers differently:
Simon Peter answered, “You are the , the Son of the living God.” —Matthew 16:16

About eight days after Jesus said this, he took Peter, John and James with him and went up onto a mountain to pray. As he was praying, the appearance of his face , and his clothes became as bright as a flash of lightning. —Luke 9:28-29

Light is often used as a symbol for the presence of God. When the light shines through Jesus, it shows that God’s presence and glory are in him.

What does the fog story illustrate?

Faith is not walking by what you can see. Faith is trusting what you have already been shown.

Call to Worship - Rev. Dana Seiler

  • Leader: We come with questions, wonder, and longing.
  • People: We come searching for who Jesus truly is.
  • Leader: On hillsides and in villages, Christ called people to follow.
  • People: On a mountain, his glory was revealed.
  • Leader: Let us worship the One who reveals God’s love to everyone.
  • People: Let us worship Jesus Christ, God’s beloved Son.

Hymn “Holy, Holy, Holy” #138 Verses 1, 2, 4

Prayer of Confession:
Holy Lord, we confess that we often keep Jesus safely small. We label him as a teacher, helper, and moral guide, yet fail to elevate him fully as Lord of our lives. We resist turning over our lives to him because following him asks more of us than we want to give. We deny when faith feels risky. We hesitate when obedience feels costly. We turn away when glory looks like a cross. Forgive us for our lukewarm faith. Open our eyes to see Jesus clearly, and our hearts to trust him fully. We ask all this in the name of Jesus, who we declare as our Lord and Savior, Amen.

Doxology

Affirmation of Faith - The Apostles’ Creed:
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
