Sermon - “Galatians at a Glance”

What happened after Paul left the churches of Galatia?

I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you to live in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different — which is really no gospel at all. Evidently, some people are throwing you into confusion and are trying to pervert the gospel of Christ. —Galatians 1:6-7

After discussing what was going wrong in Galatia, Paul turns his attention to our new identity in Christ.

I have been with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. —Galatians 2:20a

There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all in Christ Jesus. —Galatians 3:28

According to Paul, how should we use our newfound freedom in Christ?

For the entire is fulfilled in keeping this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” —Galatians 5:14

When in doubt, do the loving thing.

Call to Worship - Rev. Dana Seiler

  • Leader: Christ has set us free.
  • People: Not freedom to harm, but freedom to love.
  • Leader: We are not bound by fear or law or striving.
  • People: We are held by the grace of God.
  • Leader: The Spirit calls us into lives shaped by the love of God.
  • People: We come to worship the God whose grace makes us free.

Hymn - “To God Be The Glory” - #485 - 2 Verses

Prayer of Confession:
Gracious God, You have called us into freedom, yet we wrap ourselves in our old chains time and time again. We try to prove ourselves worthy. We measure ourselves and others by standards that you did not set. We trade the wide field of grace for the narrow path of rules and obligations. Forgive us when we fail to comprehend the consuming power of your love and forgiveness. By your Spirit, untangle us from fear and pride and teach us the freedom that serves in love. Root us again in the grace that first claimed us in Christ’s name, Amen.

Doxology

Affirmation of Faith - The Apostles’ Creed:
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
