Sermon “Rooted, Strengthened, and Overflowing”

Christ is the image of the invisible God. —Colossians 1:15a

Paul goes on to provide a rich description of Jesus: He existed before anything was created and is supreme over all creation, for through him God created everything in the heavenly realms and on earth… Everything was created through him and him. —Colossians 1:15b-16

Nihilism—the belief that life has no ultimate or purpose. Christianity— Your life has meaning because you were made FOR Jesus.

Paul uses three verbs to describe the ongoing life of a Christian:

  • Be rooted and built up in Christ
  • Be in the faith as you were taught
  • Be overflowing with

Here there is no Gentile or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but is all, and is in all. —Colossians 3:11

When you come to this church, you are a part of the family of God. And God’s family is beautifully diverse.

Call to Worship - Rev. Dana Seiler

  • Leader: Christ is the image of the invisible God,
  • People: In Christ, heaven and earth come together.
  • Leader: Through Christ, all things were made;
  • People: In Christ, all things find life.
  • Leader: Come and worship the God, our Creator.
  • People: Let us worship God, who reigns supreme.

Hymn - “In Christ Alone” - Verses 1, 3, 4

Prayer of Confession:
Supreme God, we organize our lives around what we believe is most important. Careers, schedules, family expectations, finances, and countless responsibilities compete for the center of our attention. Your call to love and serve others with humility and compassion often becomes forgotten in our busy lives. Forgive us for the ways we separate faith from our daily living. Forgive us when our relationships reflect impatience instead of grace, harshness instead of kindness, and division instead of reconciliation. Shape our lives so that our homes, friendships, and communities reflect the love we have received through Jesus Christ, our Lord, Amen.

Doxology

Affirmation of Faith - The Apostles’ Creed:
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
