Sermon - “Admonish One Another”

Let the message of Christ dwell within you richly as you teach and one another with all wisdom… —Colossians 3:16a

Admonish: set right, , warn, lay on the heart of someone.

When have you experienced admonishment that was helpful? When was it unhelpful?

We will speak the in love, growing in every way more and more like Christ, who is the head of his body, the church. —Ephesians 4:15

Do you need to have a crucial conversation with someone you love? How can you speak with both truth and love?

Truth says, “Something needs to change.” Love says, “And you won't have to change it alone. I’m here with you.”

Call to Worship - Leslie Matz

  • Leader: We are still becoming the people God calls us to be.
  • People: We come ready to listen, to learn, and to grow together.
  • Leader: Let the word of Christ dwell richly among us
  • People: Not just in our hearts, but in the way we speak to one another.
  • Leader: May our words bring wisdom, courage, correction, and grace.
  • People: As we worship together, we seek to follow Christ together.

Hymn - “All Creatures of Our God and King” - #455 V 1, 5, 6

Prayer of Confession
God of grace, we confess that sometimes we are too quick to point out the faults of others. We avoid difficult conversations because they are uncomfortable. We speak our truth without enough love, humility, or kindness. We fail to examine our own lives with the same attention that we give to those around us. Forgive us when our words tear down instead of build up. Give us wisdom to know when to speak, courage to speak up, and grace to speak with love. Help us become people who can both give and receive honest words, trusting that you are always at work in us through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

Doxology

Affirmation of Faith
We believe that faith is not meant to be lived alone. We are called to walk together as the body of Christ, learning from one another, encouraging one another, and helping one another grow. We believe that sometimes love means offering encouragement, and sometimes love means speaking a difficult truth. We believe that we all need people who will comfort us in times of sadness, walk beside us through life, and lovingly point us toward Christ. We believe that as we teach, encourage, challenge, forgive, and love one another, we grow more fully into the people God calls us to be. So we seek to speak with wisdom and humility, to listen with open hearts, and to support others as we seek to do God’s will together. Amen.
