Reflection on Hell - Kim Nichols

Song - “Lord, I Need You”

Sermon - “Thy Will Be Done”

When you imagine hell, what words or images come to mind?

Hell γέεννα=
Ge means valley. Henna means Hinnom. Gehenna referred to the “Valley of Hinnom.”

Jesus’ Parable of the Wheat and Weeds Jesus = Sower Good Seed = People of the Kingdom Weeds = Enemy = Devil Harvesters = Angels

We live in a time when God permits good and evil to coexist. One day God will weed out of his kingdom everything that causes sin and all who do evil.

“There are only two kinds of in the end: those who say to God, “Thy will be done,” and those to whom God says, in the end, “Thy will be done.” —C.S. Lewis, The Great Divorce

When the mysteries of heaven and hell feel like too much to wrap your mind around, rely on the character of God.

Call to Worship - Kim Nichols

  • Leader: God calls us to choose the way that leads to life.
  • People: We come seeking the path that leads us closer to God.
  • Leader: God invites us to care for those around us.
  • People: We come to encourage and lift others up.
  • Leader: God brings us to worship together today.
  • People: We come to worship our merciful God.

Hymn - “Come Ye Sinners, Poor and Needy” - 3 Verses

Prayer of Confession
Merciful God, we confess that we sometimes choose our own way, even when we know it leads us away from you. We become so focused on ourselves that we overlook the needs of others. We ignore injustice when it is inconvenient, hold onto anger when forgiveness is possible, and choose comfort when love calls us to sacrifice. Forgive us when our choices bring hurt to ourselves, to others, or to your creation. Give us courage to hear the teachings of Jesus and the humility to change when we need to change, through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

Doxology

Affirmation of Faith - The Apostles’ Creed:
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
