All In 6: Security Is Found In Our Surrender

Micaiah Irmler

Mark 4:35-41 NLT

35 On the same day, when evening had come, He said to them, “Let us cross over to the other side.”  36 Now when they had left the multitude, they took Him along in the boat as He was. And other little boats were also with Him.  37 And a great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that it was already filling.  38 But He was in the stern, asleep on a pillow. And they awoke Him and said to Him, “Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?” 39 Then He arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace, be still!” And the wind ceased and there was a great calm.  40 But He said to them, “Why are you so fearful? How is it that you have no faith?”  41 And they feared exceedingly, and said to one another, “Who can this be, that even the wind and the sea obey Him!”

Key Thought: Storms can’t ruin your faith; storms reveal your faith.

Remember: When faith rises fear falls, when fear rises faith falls.

Note: Fear is us fighting for control and failing.

I. Feelings of doesn’t mean Jesus is .

  1. There can be calm all around you and still inside you.
  2. What’s going on around you is not your greatest problem; what’s going on within you is.
  3. what’s going on around you won’t fix what’s going on within you.

Colossians 3:15 Let the peace of God, to which also you are called in one body, rule in your hearts. And be thankful.

  1. Stop and start resting in the one who is in control.
  2. You can struggle with it or you can surrender it to someone who can control it.

II. that Jesus may not give you an answer. vs. 38

38 But He was in the stern, asleep on a pillow. And they awoke Him and said to Him, “Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?”

Remember: Our questions are a subtle attempt to get God to surrender to our control.

Quote: Pastor and Author Cary Schmidt said in his book “Live Lighter, Love Better” - “Your freedom to question God is not a right, but a gift of His grace. God is not obligated to accept or answer your questions.”

Isaiah 55:8-9 8 For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. 9 As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.

III. Jesus lack of has nothing to do with lack of vs. 37-39

  1. Jesus is Here

35 On the same day, when evening had come, He said to them, “Let us cross over to the other side.”  36 Now when they had left the multitude, they took Him along in the boat as He was. And other little boats were also with Him.

  1. Jesus Hears You

Jeremiah 33:3 says, “Call to me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know.”

  1. Jesus Will Help You

Psalms 34:19 says, “Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers him out of them all.”

Remember: Jesus is not just present; Jesus is also powerful.

Remember: Stop telling God there is a storm and start telling your storm there is a God.

IV. When storms assault you, rest assured Jesus cares and is in . vs. 39-41

39 Then He arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace, be still!” And the wind ceased and there was a great calm.  40 But He said to them, “Why are you so fearful? How is it that you have no faith?”  41 And they feared exceedingly, and said to one another, “Who can this be, that even the wind and the sea obey Him!”

  1. Some people have control but don’t care.
  2. Some people care but don’t have control.
  3. Jesus cares and has control.
