The Call of Christ to Ordinary People

Ordinary People

By Matt Marrs, October 02, 2022

The Big Idea - God uses ordinary people to accomplish his extraordinary purposes.

Mark 1:16-20 – Passing alongside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew the brother of Simon casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. And Jesus said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you become fishers of men.” And immediately they left their nets and followed him. And going on a little farther, he saw James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, who were in their boat mending the nets. And immediately he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants and followed him.

The call of Christ goes out to ordinary people in ordinary places.

“If you feel weak, limited and ordinary, you are the best material through which God can work.” – Henry Blackaby

1 Corinthians 1:27-28 – But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are.

The call of Christ invites ordinary people to take extraordinary steps of faith.

The call of Christ empowers ordinary people with extraordinary ability.

Acts 1:8 – You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses…

Colossians 1:28-29 – We proclaim him, warning everyone with all wisdom, that we present everyone mature in Christ. For this I toil, struggling with all his energy that he powerfully works within me.

The call of Christ compels ordinary people to sacrifice what is common and familiar for extraordinary opportunities.
