Gluttony replaces heavenly with earthly

2 Cor. 1:4b – so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.

Food can become a god to us

Gen. 25:24-26a – When her days to give birth were completed, behold, there were twins in her womb. The first came out red, all his body like a hairy cloak, so they called his name Esau. Afterward his brother came out with his hand holding Esau's heel, so his name was called Jacob…

Gen. 25:27-28 – When the boys grew up, Esau was a skillful hunter, a man of the field, while Jacob was a quiet man, dwelling in tents. Isaac loved Esau because he ate of his game, but Rebekah loved Jacob.

Gen. 25:29-31 – Once when Jacob was cooking stew, Esau came in from the field, and he was exhausted. And Esau said to Jacob, “Let me eat some of that red stew, for I am exhausted!” (Therefore his name was called Edom.) Jacob said, “Sell me your birthright now.”

Gen. 25:32-34 – Esau said, “I am about to die; of what use is a birthright to me?” Jacob said, “Swear to me now.” So he swore to him and sold his birthright to Jacob. Then Jacob gave Esau bread and lentil stew, and he ate and drank and rose and went his way. Thus Esau despised his birthright.

Heb. 12:15-16 – See to it that no one fails to obtain the grace of God; that no “root of bitterness” springs up and causes trouble, and by it many become defiled; that no one is sexually immoral or unholy like Esau, who sold his birthright for a single meal.

Gen. 27:4 – And prepare for me delicious food, such as I love, and bring it to me so that I may eat, that my soul may bless you before I die.”

Fasting raises our by denying a

Lu. 4:4b – “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone’.”

Feasting raises our spiritual awareness by encouraging

1 Tim. 4:3b-5 – …require abstinence from foods that God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth. For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, for it is made holy by the word of God and prayer.
