The Bible is even when it’s hard to understand Lu. 14:25-26 – Now great crowds accompanied him, and he turned and said to them, “If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple. Mk. 12:29-31 – Jesus answered, “The most important is, ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.” The commandments are both and Deut. 5:16a – Honor your father and your mother, as the Lord your God commanded you… Honoring your parents means you give to the moral order they represent Prov. 3:5-6 – Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. You can both honor your parents and live in greater freedom by Deut. 5:16b – that your days may be long, and that it may go well with you in the land that the Lord your God is giving you. Lu. 14:31a – Or what king, going out to encounter another king in war, will not sit down first and deliberate… Lu. 14:31 – Or what king, going out to encounter another king in war, will not sit down first and deliberate whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand? Lu. 14:27 – Whoever does not bear his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple.
