Signs of the End of the Age (Part Three)

Matthew 24:36 – 51

January 21, 2024

LifePath Journey Week 1

But concerning that day and hour, no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only. For as were the days of Noah, so will be the coming of the Son of Man… Therefore, you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect. - Matthew 24:36 – 37, 44

Who, then is the faithful and wise servant, whom his master has set over his household, to give them their food at the proper time? Blessed is that servant whom his master will find so doing when he comes. Truly, I say to you, he will set him over all his possessions. - Matthew 24:45 – 47

While the church is not less than Sunday services, it is far more. It must be more to survive the Western spiritual apocalypse. Church must become a thick web of interdependent relationships between resilient disciples of Jesus, deeply loyal to the Way… we must move beyond Sunday and loose ties, to become a robust counter anti-culture not just against the world, but for the world. - John Mark Comer, Live No Lies

Sermon Outline:

  1. The Call to Live with the Certainty of Christ’s Coming, but the Uncertainty of When (24:36 – 41)

  1. The Call to Choose Personal Accountability within a Counter-Cultural Community (24:36 – 51)

Discussion Questions:

  1. Have you read, heard or seen any of the books, songs or movies that were mentioned at the beginning of the message?

What affect did they have on you?
Did you study what the Scriptures teach after you encountered them?

  2. What does the doctrine of Christ’s Second Coming mean to your faith and life?

  1. Why do you think Jesus gave us certain signs that would precede His coming, but not tell us more specifically when He will come?
  1. How do you interpret vs. 48 – 51? What does it say to those who pay no heed to the imminent return of Jesus Christ to the earth?
  1. How tight is your personal accountability to a community of faith that lives in a counter-cultural way on this earth?
Why is it so essential that we be ‘in this together’?

Application:

A New Year has just begun. It is a good time to examine the wellness of your soul and what you are doing to grow in faith, especially in light of the teaching on Christ’s second coming. What decision could you make this week to journey less alone, and more in community?
