Have you ever had one of those days?

Unpacking Luke 5:1-11

  1. Jesus steps into our ordinary lives (vv. 1–3).

  2. Jesus calls us beyond our own experience (vv. 4–7).

  3. Seeing Jesus clearly changes how we see ourselves (vv. 8–10a).

  4. Jesus meets our fear with grace and a calling (v. 10b).

  5. Following Jesus means leaving something behind (v. 11).

Small Group Discussion Questions

1. Peter was going about his ordinary work after a long, disappointing night when Jesus stepped into his boat. Where do you tend to look for God to work in your life, and how might you be overlooking His presence in your everyday routines, relationships, workplace, or challenges?

2. Peter knew fishing, and everything in his experience told him that going back out was pointless. Yet he said, “But at your word I will let down the nets.” Can you think of a time when following Jesus required you to trust His Word over your own instincts or preferences? What makes that kind of obedience difficult?
3. When Peter witnessed Jesus' power, he became deeply aware of his own sinfulness. Why do you think a clearer understanding of who Jesus is often leads to a clearer understanding of who we are? How can we honestly acknowledge our sin without becoming trapped in shame or believing that we are beyond the reach of God's grace?
4. Jesus responded to Peter's sense of unworthiness by saying, “Don't be afraid,” and then giving him a new calling. How does Peter's experience challenge the idea that we must get our lives completely together before God can use us? What might it look like for God to use your gifts, experiences, or even past failures to serve others and point them toward Jesus?
5. The fishermen left everything and followed Jesus. This sermon reminds us that following Jesus is more than admiring Him or agreeing with His teaching; it means allowing Him to reshape our priorities. What is one area of your life where Jesus may be asking you to move from simply believing in Him to actively following Him? What might you need to surrender, change, or begin doing in response?
