Introduction: Romans 6:14 is one of the most misunderstood verses in the Bible. The who looks to the law to achieve salvation hears “no dominion” and assumes any sin in a person indicates they are not yet saved. The person sees "not under law" and assumes that means that we don't have any rules to follow in this life. Clearly, both extremes have misunderstood this verse. Let's look closer at this verse to see what Paul means. • What does the context tell us about how to interpret this verse? "For sin shall not have dominion over you…" • Who is your Master? • What did He do to get that position? • Is there any way possible for Him to lose His Lordship over you? Why not? "...for you are not under law…" • What did the law accomplish both good and bad? • How were we redeemed out from under sin and the law? • After we were redeemed what did we become according to Gal 4:5-7. "...but under grace." • What is God's grace intended to do or accomplish in your life? • How is grace different from the law? • How does grace get you to do what the law describes without putting you back under it? • Knowing these things, how would you explain to someone that grace does not promote sin?
