By Pastor Craig Phelps, March 13, 2022

Introduction: In Romans 7:13-25 Paul will answer one final question or objection about the relationship between law, sin and grace. The debate over this passage is whether Paul is describing his life before or after ? Is this the battle of the lost man or the saved man? In Romans 5:20-21 Paul described a great over sin and death through Christ Jesus. It was a triumphant climax to the chapter but it raised some questions that Paul has been answering in chapters 6 and 7. This last question and the context demand his answer be an explanation of the of the law in our salvation.

What evidence is there that Paul is speaking of himself before salvation?

What evidence is there that Paul is speaking of himself after salvation?

How is the struggle he describes different from the one in Galatians 5:16-18?

I believe what this passage describes is a man whose has been awakened (was blind but now sees) and now recognizes his deadness and to satisfy the law. This ultimately pushes him to which was the intent of the law all along. This is the period from when the law “came to him” and when he accepted Christ as Savior.

In 13 the law revealed his utter which he is now going to describe for us.

In 14 he is still carnal, sold into sin but now he it.

In 15 he describes a battle which he continually because he's still in bondage.

In 16-17 is controlling him rather than him mastering sin.

In 18-20 he continues to sin which is the state of a believer (1 John 3:6).

In 21-23 he remains a . His mind is right but there is no mention of the Spirit.

In 24 he finally arrives at a crossroads where he realizes his need of a .

In 25 he finds that Savior in and then recaps what he described before.
