Introduction: Here Paul is not talking about how we escape the penalty of sin but how, now that the power of sin is broken, we can actually begin to do what we could not do before, which is walk rightly before a holy God as the law describes for us. In verse 4 he said the one who is capable of doing that is the one who walks according to the Spirit rather that the flesh. The Spirit and the flesh will continue to be our focus today. Let’s see what Paul has to say. 5 For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. (Ref. Galatians 5:16-25) 6 For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. 7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be. 8 So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God. 9 But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Discussion Questions and Action Items: What things can you do to better “set your mind” on Spirit led things and not on things of the flesh? Can you identify some times where you might have been or still be acting in the flesh rather than the Spirit? Have you turned from that, righted that wrong, made amends? If not, what is stopping you? (Hint: It’s probably you.)
