Inconceivable

Romans 9:25-29

By Pastor Craig Phelps, February 25, 2023

Introduction: In this passage Paul is going to use the prophets to show us that what some may have considered inconceivable was actually foretold in scripture. He is going to show us something regarding the Jews, something regarding the gentiles and something regarding us all.

25 As He says also in Hosea: “I will call them My people, who were not My people, and her beloved, who was not beloved.” 26 “And it shall come to pass in the place where it was said to them, ‘You are not My people,’ There they shall be called sons of the living God.”

  1. According to scripture, the gentiles would be into the family of God.
  • Why did God tell Hosea to marry a harlot?

  • His wife’s children were named and .

  • Hosea said that some would later be loved and called God’s people again. According to Paul this was not just some Jews who would be restored but ultimately some too.

27 Isaiah also cries out concerning Israel: “Though the number of the children of Israel be as the sand of the sea, The remnant will be saved. 28 For He will finish the work (word) and cut it short in righteousness, Because the Lord will make a short work upon the earth.”

  1. According to scripture, an Israelite by birth could be from the family of God.
  • Only of the nation or a remnant will be saved.

  • It will happen according to His .

  • His Word will be accomplished and .

  • It will be a work.

  • How did a people entrusted with the Word of God not know this?

  • How can we avoid making the same mistake?

29 And as Isaiah said before: “Unless the Lord of Sabaoth had left us a seed, we would have become like Sodom, and we would have been made like Gomorrah.”

  1. According to scripture, apart from the Lord, both Jews and Gentiles would all be from the family of God.
  • Three questions about this verse:

    • Does left mean or left remaining? Is this good or bad?
    • Is seed just another word for or does Paul mean something more?
    • Does he mean a single seed(person) or a of descendants?
  • Three possible translations and their meanings:

    a. “Unless the Lord had forsaken a portion of Israel, we would have become like Sodom and Gomorrah.”

    • Some of Israel had to be in order for a portion to be saved.
    b. "Unless the Lord had preserved a remnant, we would have become like Sodom and Gomorrah.”*
    • Unless God had saved some, would have been saved.
    c. “Unless the Lord had forsaken a seed, we would have become like Sodom and Gomorrah.”*
    • The seed is who was forsaken to save us from destruction.

All three are true. All of us, Jew and gentile would have gone the way of Sodom and Gomorrah if not for the Word of the Lord. Yes, some were lost so that others might be found. Yes, some were found otherwise all would have been lost and yes, it was His forsaken seed, Jesus, which made salvation possible.
