By Pastor Craig Phelps, March 18, 2023

Introduction- At the end of chapter 9, Paul told us that the Jews failed to attain salvation because they pursued it by the works of the law rather than faith. In the first part of chapter 10, he said they were pursuing a righteousness of their own rather than the righteousness of God. He is now going to look back to Moses to show us that salvation by faith was foretold long ago.

5 For Moses writes about the righteousness which is of the law, “The man who does those things shall live by them.”

A)-Paul begins by describing the righteousness that the Jews pursued by the works of the from Leviticus 18:5 which tells us that the result of doing the law is life.

Deut 28-30 shows us the of Romans 10:5-8, the importance of obedience to the law and also, why they would not .

• In Deut 28 we see the of obedience to the law, the of disobedience and also learn that Moses is .

• In Deut 29:1 there is more in this covenant than in the previous one.
• In Deut 29:4 they would disobey because the Lord had not given them a to perceive or eyes to see and ears to hear.
• In Deut 29:29 God is going to something that will enable them to fulfill the law.

• In Deut 30:1-6 we have a prophecy that says God is going to their hearts giving them a heartfelt, soul-deep overwhelming for God that will result in life.

• In Deut 30:11-14 we have the words Paul refers to in Romans 10. Somehow the mystery is no longer a mystery. The is no longer distant but in your heart and we didn’t have to do the to get this.

6 But the righteousness of faith speaks in this way, “Do not say in your heart, ‘Who will ascend into heaven?’ ” (that is, to bring Christ down from above) 7 or, “ ‘Who will descend into the abyss?’ ” (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). 8 But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart”(that is, the word of faith which we preach):

B)-Moses was not speaking of righteousness through the works of the law but through .

C)-Paul’s different wording is making the mystery to us.

  • Paul adds, “do not say in your heart”, to them it is not their righteousness (Dt 9:5).
  • Paul says where Moses says “Word” because Jesus is the word of God that has been revealed.
  • The mystery of God has been revealed through the of Jesus who came down.
  • He even mentions the death and resurrection because that us to obtain the righteousness of God.
  • In Jesus we the mystery of God’s plan, that by we can attain to the righteousness of God and satisfy all the requirements of the law in Him.
