Introduction: In verse 1 Paul told us to pursue holiness which is easier said than done. So he is now going to talk about how this plays out in our lives and what this pursuit looks like for each of us. 12:2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. * Paul’s commands in v.2 are in the present tense which means they are to be our ongoing daily in life. * If we are being conformed to the world then we are not being . * If we are being transformed then we are not being to the world. * How does a boat floating on the water illustrate how we are to be in the world but not of the world? 2a And do not be conformed to this world, What does Paul mean by “this world”? Since the garden Satan has been using and to conform us. In Christ, we have been saved from this world but are not yet from this world (Gal 1:3-5). The enemy has not and it will not stop trying to us. Conforming is not done from the but the . 2b but be transformed Transforming happens from the . It is a metamorphosis. Apart from the and , this will not happen. We are not ,though. We must obey the Spirit of God inside of us, receive his grace and by faith walk in it (Gal 5:16). It’s not that the law of God is not our guide. It is simply to say that outwardly following rules does not change the inner man. It is the grace of God acting through the Spirit of God that transforms the inner man, by faith, writing the law of God on our hearts and that gives us not only the desire but the power to follow Him and to live as He would have us to live, holy.
