Introduction: Today we will consider our fellowship with God and each other and what it means to walk in the light. 5a This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, The Gnostics looked inward within themselves for truth. Christians find truth in the prophets and ultimately in Jesus (Heb 1:1-2). We have a reliable record of this revelation in our Bibles, like this passage. 5b that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all. In scripture, light is synonymous with righteousness and darkness with evil. Here God is completely light, meaning He is perfect, He is holy. The Gnostics believed the creator was an evil god and all matter was inherently evil, only the spirit could be saved. Christians believe in a holy God who made a good world that was corrupted when mankind freely chose to sin but it is still redeemable, both body and soul. 6 If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. Gnostics taught the spirit could be saved but the body would continue in sin. Scripture teaches both the body and the spirit are redeemed. We are justified (not guilty) the moment we place our trust in Jesus. Our bodies will be glorified to a sinless perfect state when Christ returns. Sanctification is the process that transforms us into the likeness of Jesus. Sanctification occurs as we walk in the light of the Lord. We continually put to death the deeds of the flesh (Rom 8) No one who truly has the light continues to walk in darkness. 7 But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin. Your walk is the direction or the pursuit of your life, you’re chasing after godliness. It is not to say that you have nailed it already. As we walk in the light, sin is revealed to us. Dealing with our sin can be a struggle but the one who walks in the light does not settle on sin but pursues sanctification. John gives us two things to encourage us with the struggle if we are walking in the light. You are not alone in the journey or the struggle. No sin revealed by the light is too much for the blood of Jesus to cleanse from your life.
