Introduction: What does it mean or look like for those who claim to have fellowship with Him regarding sin our life. John addresses this in vss. 6-10. 6 If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin. 8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us. • Verses 6-10 are five statements. • Verse 6, 8 & 10 talk about some view of sin in our life. • Verse 7 and 9 talk about the of sin and how it is dealt with. • Verse 6 says it is wrong to claim we have fellowship with God and continue to in the darkness. • Walking in darkness or leading a life in pursuit of sin is not for the Christian. • In verse 8 it is false to say that humans are not by nature. • It is also false that you can reach a point of sinless in this life. • There is none who can say that sin is not in their life to some degree. • So, on the one hand the Christian should not pursue a life of sin but on the other we cannot say that we are without sin. • There is a big difference from sin being your and it being your . • Verse 10 describes a person who has heard God’s “thou shalt not” and has decided that God has or that God is wrong. • The Christian is to always the Word of God when it reveals sin. • In verse 9, confess means to speak in with the truth shown in God’s Word. • Confession requires else it is a lie. • To confess is to acknowledge that we have sin and that sin is not . • God is . What He has started, He will finish. What He has promised, He will accomplish. • God is just, the of Jesus has paid for every sin. • Because of this we can be of forgiveness. • But He also wants to us of all unrighteousness. • This cleansing is not just a judicial declaration but a lifelong Spiritual transformation of who you actually are and how you actually live.
