Introduction: Two weeks ago, in our study John told us, And everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself, just as He is pure. Today, John will continue to flesh out that idea in a passage that will make many of us very uncomfortable if we do not understand it correctly. Is John speaking of sinless perfection in this passage or just what some would call mortal sins? (1 John 1:8-10, 1 Tim 1:15, Gal 5:19-21, 1 Cor 6:9-10) 4 Whoever commits sin also commits lawlessness, and sin is lawlessness. • What does it mean to “commit” sin? 5 And you know that He was manifested to take away our sins, and in Him there is no sin. • Why did Jesus become a man? (2 Cor 5:21, John 1:29) 6 Whoever abides in Him does not sin. Whoever sins has neither seen Him nor known Him. • What is the evidence that we know Christ and are in Him? 7 Little children, let no one deceive you. He who practices righteousness is righteous, just as He is righteous. • What does it mean to practice righteousness? 8 He who sins is of the devil, for the devil has sinned from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil. • If a good son’s goal is to please his father, then who’s your daddy? (John 8:44) 9 Whoever has been born of God does not sin, for His seed remains in him; and he cannot sin, because he has been born of God. • What is the evidence of being born again of God? • What has God put in us to insure a good outcome? If you are actively practicing or pursuing sin in your life, what should you do? (2 Cor 12:19-21)
