Introduction: In our text today, John will be contrasting a number of different things to show us the significance of each and what they tell us about the person. Put light against light - you have nothing. Put dark against dark - you have nothing. It's in the contrast of light and dark that each give the other one meaning. – Bob Ross 13 Do not marvel, my brethren, if the world hates you. 14a We know that we have passed from death to life, 14b because we love the brethren. He who does not love his brother abides in death. 15 Whoever hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him. (See Matt 5:21-22) 16 By this we know love, because He laid down His life for us. And we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. (See John 11:25, 15:13) 17 But whoever has this world’s goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him? 18 My little children, let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth.
