The Test of Truth

1 John 4:1-6

By Pastor Craig Phelps , May 24, 2025

Introduction: Today John is going to warn us of the spiritual battle and the lies or deception of which the believer must be wary. These lying spirits were present in John’s day and are still in ours.

1 Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world. (see Eph 4:12-13)

2 By this you know the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is of God, 3a and every spirit that does not confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is not of God. (see Mt 7:21)

BF&M 2000 - God the Son - Christ is the eternal Son of God. In His incarnation as Jesus Christ He was conceived of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. Jesus perfectly revealed and did the will of God, taking upon Himself human nature with its demands and necessities and identifying Himself completely with mankind yet without sin. He honored the divine law by His personal obedience, and in His substitutionary death on the cross He made provision for the redemption of men from sin. He was raised from the dead with a glorified body and appeared to His disciples as the person who was with them before His crucifixion. He ascended into heaven and is now exalted at the right hand of God where He is the One Mediator, fully God, fully man, in whose Person is effected the reconciliation between God and man. He will return in power and glory to judge the world and to consummate His redemptive mission. He now dwells in all believers as the living and ever-present Lord.

3b And this is the spirit of the Antichrist, which you have heard was coming, and is now already in the world.

4 You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.

5 They are of the world. Therefore they speak as of the world, and the world hears them. 6a We are of God. He who knows God hears us; he who is not of God does not hear us. (see 1 Th 2:8, 2 Th 2:13-14, Eph 2:1-5)

6b By this we know the spirit of truth and the spirit of error.
