Resenting God’s goodness in life and ignoring God’s goodness in life Genesis 30:1-3 (NIV) When Rachel saw that she was not bearing Jacob any children, she became jealous of her sister. So she said to Jacob, “Give me children, or I’ll die!” 2 Jacob became angry with her and said, “Am I in the place of God, who has kept you from having children?” 3 Then she said, “Here is Bilhah, my servant. Sleep with her so that she can bear children for me and I too can build a family through her.” What are the dangers of envy? 1. Destroys our relationships 1 Corinthians 13:4 (NIV) 4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 2. Robs us of peace and joy Proverbs 14:30 (NIV) 30 A heart at peace gives life to the body, but envy rots the bones. 3. Leads us to compromise James 3:14-16 (NIV) 14 But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. 15 Such “wisdom” does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. 16 For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice. What is the cure for envy? 1. Celebrate Others Romans 12:15 (NIV) 15 Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn. 2. Cultivate Gratitude 3. Root ourselves in the Gospel
