God’s Sovereignty and Human Responsibility

I Have Questions

By Matthew Angell, May 04, 2025

“In the Bible, sovereignty refers to God's supreme power, authority, and control over all creation. It means God is the ultimate ruler, the source of all power, and everything exists because of Him. God’s sovereignty encompasses His authority, power, purpose, and He exercises this rule for the good of His people and His own glory.”

Exodus 3:19-20 (NIV) 19 But I know that the king of Egypt will not let you go unless a mighty hand compels him. 20 So I will stretch out my hand and strike the Egyptians with all the wonders that I will perform among them. After that, he will let you go.

Exodus 4:21 (NIV) 21 The Lord said to Moses, “When you return to Egypt, see that you perform before Pharaoh all the wonders I have given you the power to do. But I will harden his heart so that he will not let the people go.

Exodus 7:13 (NIV) 13 Yet Pharaoh’s heart became hard and he would not listen to them, just as the Lord had said.

Exodus 9:16 (NIV) 16 But I have raised you up for this very purpose, that I might show you my power and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth.

Takeaways:

Hebrews 3:7-11 (NIV) 7 So, as the Holy Spirit says: “Today, if you hear his voice, 8 do not harden your heartsas you did in the rebellion, during the time of testing in the wilderness, 9 where your ancestors tested and tried me, though for forty years they saw what I did. 10 That is why I was angry with that generation; I said, ‘Their hearts are always going astray, and they have not known my ways.’11 so I declared on oath in my anger,‘They shall never enter my rest.’ ”
