Built to Last

Under the Sun

By Cory DiCarro, June 11, 2023

Ecclesiastes 12:13–14 13 The end of the matter; all has been heard. Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man. 14 For God will bring every deed into judgment, with every secret thing, whether good or evil.

Big Idea: God offers us a full life in an empty world.

Ecclesiastes 1:2–3 1 The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem. 2 Vanity of vanities, says the Preacher, vanity of vanities! All is vanity. 3 What does man gain by all the toil at which he toils under the sun?

Ecclesiastes 1:4–7 4 A generation goes, and a generation comes, but the earth remains forever. 5 The sun rises, and the sun goes down, and hastens to the place where it rises. 6 The wind blows to the south and goes around to the north; around and around goes the wind, and on its circuits the wind returns. 7 All streams run to the sea, but the sea is not full; to the place where the streams flow, there they flow again.

Ecclesiastes 1:8–10 (NLT) 8 Everything is wearisome beyond description. No matter how much we see, we are never satisfied. No matter how much we hear, we are not content. 9 History merely repeats itself. It has all been done before. Nothing under the sun is truly new. 10 Sometimes people say, “Here is something new!” But actually it is old; nothing is ever truly new. 11 We don’t remember what happened in the past, and in future generations, no one will remember what we are doing now.

“If it’s new, it’s not true; and if it’s true, it’s not new.” — H.A. Ironside

Ecclesiastes 1:13–14, 17 13 And I applied my heart to seek and to search out by wisdom all that is done under heaven… 14 I have seen everything that is done under the sun, and behold, all is vanity and a striving after wind.

17 And I applied my heart to know wisdom and to know madness and folly. I perceived that this also is but a striving after wind.

Ecclesiastes 3:11 11 He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also, he has put eternity into man’s heart…

God has put eternity in the heart of humans… all humans.

We can’t go searching for the eternal in temporal.

Jesus is eternal and He’s what we’re ultimately looking for.

Have an eternal mindset with temporal feet.
