We are empowered to point others to God


Acts 1:8 “ But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

Acts 11:19-21

Now those who were scattered because of the persecution that arose over Stephen traveled as far as Phoenicia and Cyprus and Antioch, speaking the word to no one except Jews.  20  But there were some of them, men of Cyprus and Cyrene, who on coming to Antioch spoke to the Hellenists also, preaching the Lord Jesus.  21  And the hand of the Lord was with them, and a great number who believed turned to the Lord.



The “Gospel Mavericks” in Antioch:

1. Got Involved with People

2. Learned & Understood the People

3. Shared the Gospel in a Way They Could Understand


Our role is faithfulness. God’s role is fruitfulness.


Acts 11:22-25 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

John 14:6 22  The report of this came to the ears of the church in Jerusalem, and they sent Barnabas to Antioch.  23  When he came and saw the grace of God, he was glad, and he exhorted them all to remain faithful to the Lord with steadfast purpose,  24  for he was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and of faith. And a great many people were added to the Lord. 25  So Barnabas went to Tarsus to look for Saul,



Everyone needs encouragement


Gospel Mavericks, but not Lone Rangers

Acts 11:26 and when he had found him, he brought him to Antioch. For a whole year they met with the church and taught a great many people. And in Antioch the disciples were first called Christians.



The Church in Antioch:

1. United by their Identity in Christ

2. Lived Values Established by Christ

3. Sent on Mission to Proclaim Christ


Jerusalem was the church scattered. Antioch was the church sent.

2 Corinthians 5:20-21 Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.  21  For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
